When the Light Feels Far Away: A Tarot Reading for Difficult Transitions

A gentle five-card tarot reading exploring honest communication, meaningful work, mental shadows, and the love we can give and receive during difficult transitions.

Some readings ask us to sit quietly with what is hard to say.

A recent reading for a friend brought together five cards with a tender message about honesty, meaningful work, and the love we sometimes struggle to receive. I’m keeping the personal circumstances private and sharing the themes that emerged.

The thread running through the spread was communication: expressing our fears, making our needs known, sharing what matters to us, and letting the people we love know how we feel.

It also held a reminder I think many of us need:

You do not have to hide your vulnerability to deserve care.

For this tarot reading for difficult transitions, I once again reached for Brittany Keller’s Lovely Ladies Tarot Deck, my preferred deck for client spreads and non-romantic readings.

The spread: past, present, and the path ahead

For this reading, the Page of Swords served as the significator—the card representing my friend. The Nine of Pentacles occupied the past position, and the Eight of Pentacles represented the present.

The Nine of Swords appeared as a jumper, an unexpected card that I included alongside the present card. The Two of Cups completed the spread in the future position.

I read that final position as an invitation to consider the path ahead and the choices available along it. The cards offered a way to explore what needed attention, with my friend’s agency at the center.

Page of Swords: Letting your honest voice be heard

The Page of Swords brought forward a lively, young-at-heart spirit: someone whose words can lift the energy around her, who has things to say and a perspective worth hearing.

But in this reading, the Page also spoke to defensiveness and the desire to avoid being seen as vulnerable.

That combination can be familiar. We may know exactly how to encourage someone else while struggling to admit that we need encouragement ourselves. We can be quick with a reassuring word and much slower to say, “Actually, I’m frightened.”

For my friend, I interpreted the Page as an invitation to face fears honestly and allow trusted people to understand more of her inner world.

Being a good communicator includes expressing the feelings that are difficult to put into words. Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can say is:

“I don’t know what I need yet.”

“Could you listen for a little while?”

“I need some space, but I still want you close.”

Our voices have room for uncertainty, too.

Nine of Pentacles: Remembering what makes life feel rich

In the past position, the Nine of Pentacles brought themes of security, independence, and prosperity as a state of mind.

I read it as an opportunity to reflect on what has made life feel rich: the comforts we have created, the abilities we have developed, and the moments of satisfaction that belong to us.

It also carried an invitation to slow down and clear away what feels burdensome.

That could mean simplifying our surroundings, reconsidering an obligation, or giving ourselves permission to spend our attention differently. A quiet room, a familiar routine, or time without demands can matter a great deal.

The question this card offered was simple:

What would help life feel a little more peaceful right now?

We do not always need a dramatic answer. Sometimes the first step is putting down one thing we no longer have the energy to carry.

Eight of Pentacles: Giving care to meaningful work

The Eight of Pentacles spoke to meaningful work and the satisfaction of being engaged in something that matters.

For my friend, this connected with a creative project. The details are hers to keep, but the broader message was about honoring the part of ourselves that still wants to make, learn, contribute, or express something.

I interpreted this card as encouragement to be proactive: to choose an achievable next step and give it thoughtful attention.

That might mean spending a little time on a project, organizing ideas, or asking someone to help with a task that has become difficult.

There is tenderness in that invitation. Dedication can adapt to the energy we have. A small contribution still counts, and rest does not erase the care we have already given.

The Eight of Pentacles cannot guarantee a particular outcome. In this reading, it affirmed the value of attending to work that feels meaningful, at a pace that remains possible.

Nine of Swords: Meeting the mental shadows

The Nine of Swords arrived unexpectedly, bringing particular emphasis to the present.

I interpreted it as the mental shadows that can rise from within: fear, worry, and thoughts that become especially loud when everything else is quiet.

Beside the Page of Swords, it deepened the invitation to be honest. The feelings we keep hidden may be the very feelings we most need space to express.

This card also spoke to the possibility of breakthrough after breakdown—a shift in perspective that allows a little more room to breathe. That possibility carries no requirement to suffer more or find a lesson in every painful experience.

In the spiritual language of this reading, the Nine of Swords asked my friend to remember her place within the larger universal picture. Our lives include the love we have shared, the things we have created, and the connections that hold meaning for us. Fear can occupy our attention so completely that those other parts become difficult to see.

The invitation was to know the inner self with gentleness. What am I feeling? What feels heavy? What would help me feel understood?

It also echoed the Page’s young-at-heart quality: look, when you can, through the wondrous eyes of a child.

A patch of sunlight. A song you had forgotten you loved. Steam rising from a cup of tea. Someone laughing in the next room.

These moments can offer a small opening into wonder.

The light always returns, even after the darkest of nights.

I hold that phrase here as an image of comfort, connection, and moments of peace. It leaves room for difficult feelings and for the possibility of receiving something gentle alongside them.

Two of Cups: Love expressed and care received

The Two of Cups brought the reading toward connection.

Its message extended across romantic love, friendship, family, and the many relationships that make a life meaningful. It invited my friend to reaffirm those connections and consider what she wanted to say.

Relationship maintenance can sound practical, even ordinary. Yet asking how someone is doing, acknowledging their importance, or sharing a memory can hold enormous tenderness.

The Two of Cups also spoke to collaboration. Alongside the Eight of Pentacles, I read it as an invitation to consider whether a trusted person could help support meaningful work.

We can decide what help looks like and what we want to retain control over. Accepting support can be a deliberate choice that honors our wishes.

And this card made room for receiving love. Sometimes we are so concerned about asking too much that we forget the people who care about us may welcome a chance to help.

Having needs does not make us a burden.

What the cards said together

Across this spread, communication remained the clearest message.

The Page of Swords encouraged an honest voice. The Nine of Pentacles invited simplicity and comfort. The Eight of Pentacles honored meaningful effort. The Nine of Swords acknowledged the inner shadows and opened space for perspective and wonder. The Two of Cups brought attention to love, collaboration, and connection.

Together, they invited my friend to share what mattered: her fears, her needs, her hopes, and her love.
