The Empress Tarot Spread: Releasing Pain and Reclaiming Your Power

A three-card Empress tarot spread for releasing what hurts, finding hope, and transforming pain into personal power.

Some pain lingers because part of us is still trying to make sense of it. We hold the memory tightly, revisit what should have happened, or protect the beliefs that once helped us survive. The Empress offers a different kind of strength: the courage to nurture ourselves while making room for something healthier to grow.

This reading uses The Empress Spread from Elliot Adam’s Fearless Tarot, with The Empress as the main focus. I worked with Brittany Keller’s Lovely Ladies Tarot deck, whose expressive artwork brings warmth and personality to each card.

The spread asks three questions: How do I release the poison in my heart? What am I learning? And how can I transform pain into power? Together, the Four of Pentacles, The Star, and The Tower form a clear path from holding on, to remembering my light, to accepting the truth that makes transformation possible.

The Empress at the Center

The Empress is the heart of this reading. She represents care, creativity, abundance, self-worth, and the patient work of tending what we want to grow. Her presence does not ask me to deny pain or cover it with positivity. Instead, she asks what would truly nourish me now.

There is a grounded quality to The Empress. Healing may begin with rest, good food, time outdoors, creative expression, or simply speaking to myself with more kindness. She reminds me that receiving care is not weakness and that I do not have to earn softness by suffering first.

With The Empress watching over the spread, each card becomes part of a larger question: What am I ready to stop feeding, and what deserves my energy instead?

How Do I Release the Poison in My Heart? Four of Pentacles

The Four of Pentacles asks me to notice what I am clinging to. Sometimes we hold onto a painful story because it feels safer than uncertainty. Familiar misery can seem more manageable than the open space that appears when we finally let go.

This card invites me to stop gripping what makes me miserable. That does not mean dismissing what happened or forcing forgiveness before I am ready. It means recognizing when pain has stopped protecting me and started taking up the space where peace, pleasure, and possibility could live.

The Four of Pentacles also points to balance between work and play. When life becomes all duty, control, or vigilance, the heart has very little room to breathe. Rest and enjoyment are not rewards reserved for the end of healing. They are part of healing.

There may also be false beliefs ready to come down: that I must stay guarded to stay safe, that my worth depends on how much I can carry, or that letting go means what happened did not matter. The Four of Pentacles is closely tied to The Tower in this reading. What I grip too tightly may be the very structure that transformation is asking me to release.

What Am I Learning? The Star

The Star arrives like a deep breath after a difficult night. It speaks of hope, authenticity, friendship, and the quiet confidence to let myself shine.

One of its lessons is that a star personality cannot be controlled. Other people have their own paths, choices, and ways of expressing themselves. Trying to manage someone else’s light will not bring me peace. My work is to stay connected to my own.

The Star encourages me to spend time with friends, express myself, and let myself be seen. Pain can make isolation feel tempting, but healing often needs witnesses: people who can sit beside us without demanding that we become smaller, quieter, or easier to understand.

There is surrender here, too. What will be, will be. That is not an invitation to become passive. It is permission to stop wrestling with everything I cannot control. I can make wise choices, honor my needs, and still allow life to unfold without forcing every outcome.

How Can I Transform Pain into Power? The Tower

The Tower is often feared, but here it is an honest and necessary card. It asks me to face the truth my instincts have already been trying to show me. The heart can begin to heal only after it accepts reality.

Acceptance does not mean approval. It means I no longer spend my strength arguing with what is. Once the truth is named, I can decide what belongs in my life and what no longer suits me.

The Tower says I am standing on the precipice of transformation. Something built on fear, denial, or diminished expectations may not be able to come with me. That can feel unsettling, but it also creates space for a life built on firmer ground.

This card asks me to raise my standards. I deserve the best and nothing less—not perfection, and not a life without disappointment, but relationships and choices rooted in honesty, respect, reciprocity, and care. Pain becomes power when I use what I have learned to choose differently.

The Story These Cards Tell

The Four of Pentacles, The Star, and The Tower describe a movement from holding on to opening up. First, I loosen my grip on the beliefs and habits that keep pain in place. Then I reconnect with hope, friendship, and self-expression. Finally, I accept the truth and allow what cannot support my growth to fall away.

The Empress holds the center of that process. She reminds me that transformation does not have to be punishment. Even when The Tower clears the ground, I can meet myself with tenderness. I can choose what nourishes me while releasing what drains me.

This spread does not promise an instant cure or a perfectly tidy ending. It offers a compassionate direction: stop feeding the wound, remember the light that is still yours, and trust yourself enough to face what is real.

A Gentle Reflection to Take With You

If you would like to sit with this Empress tarot spread on your own, pour a cup of tea and journal with these questions:

  • What am I holding because it feels familiar, even though it hurts?
  • Where could I make more room for friendship, play, or creative expression?
  • What truth have my instincts already shown me?
  • What standard am I ready to raise?
  • What would nourishing myself look like today?

You do not need to answer everything at once. Choose the question that creates a little room to breathe and begin there.
